Rape, Violence, and TraumaPeople who have encountered acts of violence, such as rape, sexual abuse, physical assault, and domestic violence may experience a wide range of reactions. This is true also of those who have experienced or witnessed large scale violence such as terrorism or natural disasters. These individuals may feel overwhelmed by emotions or need support as they work to understand and to integrate an experience of violence into their lives. In addition, they may need guidance in the process of filing charges or making decisions regarding protection and safety. We have worked with many survivors of recent, as well as childhood, trauma and violence. The following statements are based on some of the symptoms and issues with which survivors have dealt. You may find it helpful to review them.
