Research Enterprise Newsletter - December 2008: Funding Opportunities
Dana Foundation accepting applications for 2009 Program in Neuroimmunology
The Dana Foundation has announced its 2009 Program in Neuroimmunology, which funds $200,000 over three years to junior faculty involved in immunology projects focused on brain infections and cancer. The 2009 Program will specifically invite studies of immune-based therapies for primary brain tumors and metastases to the brain of other cancers; immune responses to infections in the brain, including but not limited to viral encephalitis, meningitis, cerebral malaria, and prion diseases; and how the immune system affects the brain and how the brain modifies immune function. Specific projects may involve, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Ways to stimulate immune cell recognition and attack of primary brain tumors and metastases
- Measuring responses to therapeutic vaccines for brain tumors
- Ways to defend against viral infections in the brain
- Ways to prevent and treat infections in the brain, including cerebral malaria
- Role of immune cells in normal and abnormal brain
The Dana Foundation focuses its support on faculty researchers early in their career, at the assistant professor level, or early in their associate professor career. Established researchers pioneering efforts in these two fields (brain infections and cancers) will still be eligible to apply.
In order to be selected as a nominee for Vanderbilt University, please send the following as a preliminary proposal, in PDF format, to Julie Koh
- letter of nomination from department chair or center director
- description of proposed research (not to exceed two pages) - include specific aims, clinical research methods, and research significance
- CV or NIH Biosketch (not to exceed two pages)
- list of all current and pending awards and proposals
The Dana Foundation expects applications by April 1, 2009 when they will be reviewed by the foundation. Selected applicants will be asked to submit full proposals by May 2009.
Each applicant submitting a proposal by the deadline of December 17, 2008 will receive a confirmation email that the application has been received. Applications received after this date will not be considered. All proposals will be forwarded to an internal review committee that will choose the final nominee by mid-January. Once the decision has been made, applicants will be notified by email of the status of their proposals, and the chosen nominee will submit an application to the foundation by April 1, 2009.
