Research Enterprise Newsletter - December 2007: Funding Opportunities

NIH accepting applications for 2008 Pioneer Awards

The NIH has announced that it will accept applicants for its 2008 Director's Pioneer Award Program beginning December 16, 2007, with a final application deadline of January 16, 2008. The Pioneer Award Program supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering and transformative approaches to major contemporary challenges that have the potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect ideas substantially different from those already being pursued in the investigator's laboratory or elsewhere.

Total funding available is approximately $5 million for the five-year period. At least 5-10 awards will be made in 2008; awards will be for $500,000 in direct costs each year for five years. Investigators at all career levels who are currently engaged in research are eligible to apply. In order to maximize the success of applications from VUMC, the Office of Research is offering internal review of applications by a committee of senior investigators prior to submission. The review is optional but strongly encouraged so that the best possible applications are submitted.

Investigators planning to apply and interested in a review must contact Dr. Andrea Baruchin and submit their applications to her for internal review by December 7. For more information, please visit grants.nih.gov.

Pfizer announces funding opportunities

Pfizer has announced several funding opportunities including:

  1. Visiting Professorships in many topic areas to host a recognized expert for three days of educational exchange.
  2. Pfizer Scholars Grants in Health Policy or in Public Health to support the development of talented junior researchers.
  3. Pfizer Fellowships in Health Disparities or in Health Literacy/Clear Health Communication to support the development of talented junior researchers.

More information is available at promisingminds.com.

NIH launches "Partners in Research" program

The NIH Public Trust Initiative (PTI) has announced the new Partners in Research program. The program supports studies designed to improve public understanding of health care research and promote collaboration between scientists and community organizations. These studies should help develop strategies to increase public awareness of the NIH and the importance of new research for advancing the public health. The NIH Partners in Research program will develop partnerships between scientific or research institutions and community organizations. The goals of the program are to identify and implement new ways to increase science literacy; communicate the research needs and interests of communities; and encourage understanding of biomedical and behavioral research. The long-term objective of this program is to raise the level of public awareness and understanding of biomedical and behavioral research related to health, the role of the NIH, the role the public can play in the research enterprise, and the value of public funding. It also will increase scientists' awareness of the importance of public engagement, and develop techniques for researchers and communities to facilitate participation of lay communities in the health research endeavor. The NIH Partners in Research RFA is available on the NIH Guide website.

Albany Medical Center offers $500K prize for biomedical research

Nominations are being accepted for The Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research. The prize is $500,000 and provides recognition to a physician, biomedical scientist, or a group of physicians or scientists who have made extraordinary and sustained leadership contributions to improving healthcare and patient care, or who have successfully pursued innovative biomedical research with demonstrated translational benefits applied to improved patient care. Deadline for applications is January 5, 2008. To apply or get more information, see amc.edu/Academic/AlbanyPrize/.

Funding available for research on grapes and heart health

The California Table Grape Commission is soliciting Letters of Intent (LOIs) by December 7, 2007, for proposals for two types of grants: $25,000 grants that may be applied toward any relevant health issue; and a $75,000 grant focused on grapes and cardiovascular health. The major goal of this program is to fund studies that examine the potential health benefits of grape consumption. More information may be found at freshcaliforniagrapes.com.

OOR seeks applicants for NIH New Innovator Award

The Office of Research urges faculty members to consider submitting an application for an NIH New Innovator Award. This award supports a small number of new investigators of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative new research approaches that have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems in biomedical and behavioral research. Each grant provides up to $1.5 million in direct costs over five years. Awardees must devote at least 25% of their research effort each year to activities supported by the award. To assist applicants with their proposals, the Office of Research has convened a group of senior faculty who will provide guidance and feedback on applications. To take advantage of this resource, please email Andrea Baruchin. Additional information about the award and directions to apply are available at grants.nih.gov.

Microsoft invites proposals for computational challenges of genome-wide association studies

Microsoft Research has announced a Request for Proposals for projects to aid researchers, scientists, and clinicians in the use of genome-wide association studies. The objective of this RFP is to accelerate the rate of discovery of common genetic factors that influence health and disease. Successful proposals will address the limitations of existing systems and facilitate solving a specific genomic research question.

This RFP focuses on encouraging the development of computational solutions ranging from data access and database federation to human computer interactions and algorithm parallelization. Combining clinical and phenotype data with enabling solutions in this area will ultimately help in the prediction of disease and patient care.

Microsoft Research anticipates making approximately four to five awards averaging $150,000, with a maximum of $200,000 for any single award. Awards are made for the purpose of seed-funding larger initiatives, proofs of concept, or demonstrations of feasibility. Funding will continue after the first year only in exceptional circumstances.

The deadline for proposal submission is January 21, 2008. Visit the Microsoft Research Web site for complete program information.
