Research Enterprise Newsletter - September 2007: Funding Opportunities

Pew Scholar Program nominations due to OOR September 10

The Pew Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the 2008 Pew Scholars in Biomedical Science Program, designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences. The award of $60,000/year for 4 years is intended to provide support for junior members of the faculty as they establish their laboratories. More information is available at pewscholars.com. Only one nomination may come from both Vanderbilt Medical Center and University. Therefore, all nominees must apply through the Office of Research. A joint University/Medical Center Awards Committee will review applications and select the strongest nominee, who will be cleared to apply. To nominate an applicant, please email their CV, a letter of nomination from the department chair, and a 3- to 6-page research plan to Lynne Hutchison by September 10, 2007. The application deadline to Pew is 5pm, November 1, 2007.

NIH provides funding to promote reentry to biomedical research careers

The NIH is offering administrative supplements to research grants to support individuals with high potential to reenter an active research career after taking time off to care for children or attend to other family responsibilities. The aim is to encourage such individuals to reenter research careers within the missions of all the program areas of NIH. This program will provide administrative supplements to existing NIH research grants for the purpose of supporting full-time or part-time research by these individuals in a program geared to bring their existing research skills and knowledge up to date. It is anticipated that at the completion of the supplement, the reentry scientist will be in a position to apply for a career development (K) award, a research award, or some other form of independent research support.
