Research Enterprise Newsletter - August 2007: Funding Opportunities
NIH announces EUREKA program
The NIH has announced the creation of a new program to fund highly innovative research of unusually high impact. The program, called EUREKA (Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration), targets investigators who are testing novel, unconventional hypotheses or are pursuing major methodological or technical challenges. The potential impact of the proposed research must be substantial in terms of both the size of the scientific community affected and the magnitude of its impact on the community. Highlights of the EUREKA program include direct costs of up to $800,000 over 4 years and a specialized R01 application focusing very clearly on significance and innovation. The awards will be through NIGMS, NINDS, NIMH, NIDA, and NIAID. Probably about 20 awards will be made. The application receipt date is October 24, 2007. DoD offers $300 million for post-traumatic stress and brain injury research
The Department of Defense has announced $150 million in new funding opportunities in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder research and an additional $150 million for Traumatic Brain Injury research. A key priority of the PTSD/TBI Research Program is to compliment ongoing DOD efforts to ensure the health and readiness of military forces. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). New funding mechanisms include:
- New Investigator Awards, with a required Letter of Intent due on September 13, 2007.
- Advanced Technology - Therapeutic Development Awards, with a required preproposal deadline of August 30, 2007.
- Research Consortium Awards, with a required preproposal deadline of August 30, 2007.
- Investigator Initiated Awards, with required letter of intent due September 4, 2007.
Detailed descriptions of each of these mechanisms, evaluation criteria, submission requirements, and deadlines are provided in the FY07 Program Announcements for the FY07 PTSD/TBI Research Program. Each Program Announcement is available electronically for downloading from the Grants.gov web site.
FDA offers clinical trial funding
The FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development (OOPD) has announced FY2009 and FY2010 grant awards to support clinical trials on the safety and effectiveness of products for rare diseases and conditions. These studies are intended to provide acceptable data to the FDA that will substantially contribute to the approval of new products, or new indications for already marketed products. Rare diseases or conditions are defines as those with a prevalence of fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. For more information go to fda.gov.
Burroughs Wellcome Fund announces Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease award
The Burroughs-Wellcome Fund is accepting nominations for the 2008 Award in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease, which provides opportunities for assistant professors to bring multidisciplinary approaches to the study of human infectious diseases. This award provides $500,000 over a period of five years ($100,000 per year). The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study the pathogenesis of infectious disease at its most fundamental level-the points where human and microbial systems connect.
Vanderbilt may nominate ONLY TWO researchers for this award; therefore, selection of candidates will be made by the Office of Research Awards Committee. If you would like nominate a candidate, please email their CV, a letter of nomination from the department chair, and a 3- to 6-page research plan to lynne.hutchison@vanderbilt.edu by September 1, 2007. Submission of final applications to BWF is November 1, 2007. For more information on the award, go to bwfund.org.
