Searle Scholars Program now accepting nominations through OOR
The Searle Scholars Program is accepting nominations for its 2008 Searle Scholars Awards. Applicants must be pursuing independent research in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. Candidates should have begun their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2006 and be in their first or second year of a tenure-track position. Funding will be $80,000 per year for three years. Vanderbilt may nominate a total of two (2) applicants from the entire institution. Because of this, ALL nominations must be made through the Office of Research. Applications will be reviewed by a joint Medical Center/University committee, with the two strongest candidates cleared to apply. To nominate an applicant, please email a CV, a letter of nomination from their department chair, and a 3- to 6-page research plan to Lynne Hutchison (lynne.hutchison@vanderbilt.edu). BWF Career Awards for Medical Scientists nominations due to OOR July 27
The Burroughs-Wellcome Fund (BWF) is accepting applications for its 2007 Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS). CAMS provides clinically trained individuals with bridging support in basic biomedical, disease oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology research. The five-year, $700,000 award supports the physician scientist during the final one or two years of a mentored position, then carries that support to an independent position. Vanderbilt is limited to five (5) applicants. All nominations must go through the Office of Research, where they will be reviewed and the top five applicants approved by OOR's Awards Committee. To nominate an applicant, please email their CV, a letter of nomination from their department chair, and a short (3-6 pages) research plan to Lynne Hutchison (lynne.hutchison@vanderbilt.edu). Award nominations must be received by July 27, 2007. and approved nominees must apply to BWF by October 1, 2007. American Society of Clinical Oncology offers $450K grant
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is accepting proposals to support Advanced Clinical Research in Hematologic Malignancies. Grant funding is $450,000 for the period July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2011. Proposals must support clinical research in either adult or pediatric hematologic malignancies. Applicants must be a physician (MD or DO) who is 5 to 10 years post final subspecialty training at the time of grant award, have a full-time faculty appointment in a clinical department, have completed productive postdoctoral/post-fellowship research, have demonstrated the ability to undertake independent investigator-initiated clinical research, and be an active member of ASCO. Applicants should expect to spend 75% of time during the award period dedicated to research. A Letter of Intent is due July 10, 2007, with applications due August 15, 2007. Caring for Carcinoid Foundation Offers $150K per year
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) is offering up to $150,000 per year for two years for research pertaining to carcinoid cancer. The deadline for a Letter of Intent is August 1, 2007, with applications due September 1. CFCF is the leading 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to discovering a cure for carcinoid cancer and has awarded over $2 million to world-class scientists. The foundation welcomes all scientists to review and consider its RFP on the web at caringforcarcinoid.org.
Beckman Foundation Offers $300k to Young Investigators
The Beckman Foundation is accepting applications for the Beckman Young Investigator Award, which promotes research in chemistry and the life sciences, and the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The Beckman Young Investigator (BYI) Program is intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers. The BYI program is open to persons with tenure-track appointments in academic and non-profit institutions that conduct fundamental research in the chemical and life sciences. To be eligible, an applicant should not have completed more than three full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment on or before the BYI. Funding is for up to $300,000 over 3 years. More information is available at beckman-foundation.com. No more than two (2) candidates may apply from Vanderbilt. Therefore, all University and Medical Center applications must go through the Office of Research. A joint awards committee will select the 2 strongest applicants, who will be cleared to apply.
