Research Enterprise Newsletter - June 2009: CORE News

Scholarship Mechanism for core facilities to be implemented in July

Shared resources and core facilities receiving direct financial support from Research Centers will no longer offer discounted pricing to Center members, beginning in July. Instead, eligible investigators will be awarded credits in the form of scholarships that can be redeemed in Center-supported core facilities. The Scholarship Mechanism has been designed to increase institutional compliance with federal policy for recharge cost centers. It will function within Core Facilities Usage and Invoicing System (CORES), and the Office of Research will provide general oversight.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are scholarships determined?
Center support for a shared resource constitutes a potential scholarship pool equal to or less than the dollar amount of support. This scholarship pool may be divided and distributed to Center members as credits, or scholarships, for use of the supported core facility.
Who awards scholarships to investigators?
Each Research Center determines who will receive scholarships, and manages the awards.
How do investigators, center administrators and core managers accurately track scholarship usage?
The Office of Research has developed a new software module for CORES, called Scholarships. This module provides complete tracking of scholarship awards, including real-time usage data and billing functionality.
How do I use a scholarship?
If you are awarded a scholarship, you will receive a voucher with a unique identifying number. Present this voucher at the time you use a core service. The core manager will use the scholarship number instead of a cost center number for billing.
Can I use a scholarship at any Vanderbilt core facility?
A specific scholarship award may be used only for the core listed on the scholarship. The scholarship credits are not transferrable.

For more information on the Scholarship program, contact Susan Meyn in the Office of Research at s.meyn@vanderbilt.edu or 322-0470.
