Research Enterprise Newsletter - June 2008: Funding Opportunities
American Heart Association offers myogenesis research funding
The American Heart Association has announced availability of funding for AHA-Jon Holden DeHaan Foundation Cardiac Myogenesis Research Centers, an $8.4 million initiative. The Jon Holden DeHaan Foundation will join with the American Heart Association to select and award three cardiac myogenesis research centers. The desired characteristics of these centers, the general requirements of the application and the peer review criteria are described in the Request for Applications (RFA) found on the American Heart Association's Web site. A Letter of Intent is required.
Gairdner Foundation accepting award applications
The James A. Gairdner Foundation invites investigators to submit a nomination for the 2009 Gairdner International Awards (deadline October 1, 2008). The Foundation has had a remarkable record of encouraging excellence, and 70 past awardees have gone on the to win a Nobel Prize in either medicine or chemistry. Nominees should be individuals whose seminal discoveries and major scientific contributions constitute an original and significant achievement in biomedical sciences. Nominations in the field of translational research are welcome. Details regarding the nomination process are given at gairdner.org. The Awards will be presented at the Gairdner Foundation International Awards Dinner on October 23, 2008.
Beckman Foundation accepting Young Investigator applications
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation is accepting applications for the Beckman Young Investigators Program. The program provides approximately $300,000 over three years to provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Projects should show promise for contributing to significant research advances in research in chemistry and the life sciences, and particularly in research that fosters the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The program is open to tenure-track faculty who have NOT completed more than 3 full years in their tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment. No individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than 3 times. Vanderbilt may nominate two candidates. Because this is an opportunity that limits the number of nominations, the Office of Research will collect nominations in preparation for a Vanderbilt-wide selection process. Those interested should send a letter of nomination, the candidate's CV, and a 3- to 6-page research plan to Andrea Baruchin by June 13, 2008. The deadline for applications to be at Beckman is October 1, 2008. For more information, please go to beckman-foundation.com
