Marnett receives honors

Larry Marnett, PhD, director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Chemical Biology, has received an Honorary PhD (Doctor Honoris Causa) from Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo, Uruguay. Marnett also has been named University Professor at Vanderbilt with full academic rights in the A&S College (Chemistry) and the School of Medicine (Biochemistry). In March, Marnett attend the Distinguished Lecture tour sponsored by the Foundation for the Promotion of Cancer Research in Japan, where he gave a lecture at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, then a keynote lecture in a symposium in Nagoya.

Mundy receives award from Bone & Mineral Society

Gregory Mundy, M.D., has been awarded the Pieter Gaillard Founders Award from the International Bone and Mineral Society (IBMS), a lifetime achievement award which recognizes outstanding contributions, research, leadership and dedication to the Society and the field of bone and mineral research. Mundy, the John A. Oates Chair in Translational Medicine and director of the Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology, has had a 35-year career in skeletal research, holding posts at the University of Rochester, University of Connecticut School of Medicine and University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He holds 41 patents and has published more than 550 original articles, reviews and book chapters.

Guengerich lands cancer research award

F. Peter (Fred) Guengerich, Ph.D., has received the 2009 award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry in Cancer Research from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). The award, which recognizes the importance of chemistry to advancements in cancer research, was presented during the society's annual meeting in Denver last week. Guengerich was honored for several of his chemical studies, including how the human cytochrome P450 enzymes convert cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens) into compounds that mutate genes or otherwise alter DNA. The work has been important for understanding the mechanisms underlying cancer, as well as suggesting ways to prevent the disease.

Van Kaer to serve on JCI consulting board

Luc Van Kaer, PhD, professor of Microbiology and Immunology, has been appointed to a two-year renewable term on the Board of Consulting Editors for the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI). As a member of the board, Van Kaer will provide critical, constructive and timely reviews of contributed articles, as well as advice on the editorial content and policy of the journal. Consulting editors are also asked to contribute to commentaries and review articles in the journal and to other print and electronic-only content on the journal's Web page.

Deis wins Newman Award for Clinical Research

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow Jamie Deis, MD, won the Elliot V. Newman Award for clinical research at the 27th annual Vanderbilt University Research Forum.
