Research Enterprise Newsletter - May 2008: Funding Opportunities

American Heart Association posts funding opportunities

The American Heart Association has announced its new Innovative Research Grant to support highly innovative, high-risk, high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the field of cardiovascular and stroke research. Program information is available on the American Heart Association web site.

The American Heart Association funds research broadly related to cardiovascular disease and stroke. We support research in clinical and basic sciences, bioengineering, biotechnology and public health. Proposals encourage applications related to obesity, women and heart disease, and resuscitation.

Great Ideas for Vanderbilt Medical Education (GIVME) Grants available

The School of Medicine requests proposals to develop a good idea in teaching and learning. Proposals may be submitted by Vanderbilt School of Medicine faculty or house staff for UME, GME, and CME projects. The grant will provide start-up support for implementing a new curricular idea or researching an educational problem. An anticipated $15,000 is available. The award for individual projects will depend on the number of awarded submissions, the overall project impact, and the amount requested by each grant request. Awards will begin July 1, 2008. Applications will be accepted through an online submission and review process, available at mc.vanderbilt.edu/medschool/otlm/. Email John Shatzer with any questions. For technical or submission assistance, contact medical.education@vanderbilt.edu.

Breast cancer outcomes funding available

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has announced two new funding opportunities in research addressing disparities in breast cancer outcomes. Requests for Applications (RFA) are available at komen.org/grants or komengrantsaccess.org. Career Catalyst in Disparities Research (CCDR) awards provide for scientists in the early stages of their career, particularly scientists from populations affected by disparities in breast cancer outcomes, to achieve research independence. This award provides up to $450,000 over 3 years for research exploring the basis for differences in breast cancer outcomes and the translation of this research into clinical and public health practice interventions. Pre-applications are due no later than June 11, 2008. Full applications are due July 31, 2008.

Post-Baccalaureate Training in Disparities Research (PBT-DR) awards provide an opportunity for individuals early in their education, particularly those from populations affected by disparities in breast cancer outcomes, and encourages them to seek careers focused on understanding and eliminating disparities. This award provides individual support of $45,000 annually for 3 years for up to three trainees. Pre-applications are required prior to starting a full application and are due no later than June 19, 2008. Full applications are due July 31, 2008.

Komen's Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) RFA will be released in early June with a focus on disparities in breast cancer outcomes. Additional information about Komen's Research Grants Program and details about funding opportunities are available from Susan G. Komen for the Cure at komen.org.

Gates Foundation offers "Grand Challenges" funding

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be accepting grant proposals for Grand Challenges Explorations until May 30, 2008. This new $100 million initiative will help scientists pursue innovative ideas for solving major global health problems. If you plan to submit a grant proposal, the deadline to register your topic is May 15, 2008. The deadline for completed submissions is May 30, 2008. You can submit your proposal online at gcgh.org/explorations. The following topics are being addressed in this round:

  • Creating new ways to protect against infectious diseases
  • Creating drugs or delivery systems that limit the emergence of resistance
  • Creating new ways to prevent or cure HIV infection
  • Exploring the basis for latency in TB

Initial grants will be $100,000 each, and projects showing success will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of $1 million or more. Full descriptions of the topics and application instructions are available at gcgh.org/explorations.

NARSAD accepting Distinguished Investigator applications

NARSAD will begin accepting applications for the 2009 Distinguished Investigator Award online starting May 1, 2008. The Distinguished Investigator Award is a one-year $100,000 USD grant for scientists at the full professor level (or equivalent). This award program is intended for established scientists who maintain peer-reviewed, competitively funded scientific programs. The deadline for application submission is May 15, 2008. For more information regarding eligibility or requirements, go to narsad.org.

You may also apply online starting May 1st.

NIH announces National Graduate Student Research Festival

The NIH National Graduate Student Research Festival will be held September 11th-12th, 2008, at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Eligible students must be enrolled in a PhD program in the U.S. and on schedule to complete their PhD degree requirements between June 2008 and October 2009. Both U.S. and international students are eligible to apply. NIH will provide travel, lodging and meal cost for the students who are invited to attend the Festival. Invitations to the Festival will be based on a competitive applications. Up to 250 students will spend two days presenting their research, networking with students from around the U.S., learning about the research conducted at NIH, and exploring postdoctoral opportunities on the NIH campus. The deadline for application is May 15, 2008. The online application can be found at training.nih.gov.
