Cold Euthanasia of Zebrafish SOP changed

The IACUC Committee at the April 23 full committee meeting voted to delete the Vanderbilt University SOP on Cold Euthanasia. From this point forward, only the use of chemical anesthetics, such as MS222, is acceptable in future protocol submissions, without a specific scientific justification for an exception to this new policy. Cold euthanasia will continue to be allowed in currently approved protocols until their expiration, but will not be allowed in any new or renewing protocols or in modifications where cold euthanasia was not previously described.

ACUP Meeting to be held May 21

The Division of Animal Care and the Office of Animal Welfare Assurance will hold their Spring Quarterly Animal Care & Use Program (ACUP) Informational Meeting on Wednesday, May 21, at 10 a.m. in Light Hall, Room 214. All animal care users are encouraged to attend and receive the latest updates on changes to policies and SOPs; post-AAALAC site visit action items; quarantine procedures for mice; the upcoming semi-annual inspection; and the transition to online protocol processing this summer. The presentation will also include an analysis of the post-approval monitoring program and tips on how to remain compliant. Refreshments will be served.

Revised Transport SOP

The IACUC Committee at its April 23 full committee meeting approved the adoption of a revised Vanderbilt University Transport SOP, which is posted on the IACUC web site at www4.vanderbilt.edu/oor/iacuc/vu-policies-guidelines.php. The new SOP defines approved routes of transportation in an effort to minimize transit time, and any health and safety risks for the general public, as well as, provide animals with protection against physiological, psychological and environmental risks. As additional routes are added or modified, they will be posted on web site.
