ARRA Challenge Grant Information

The RFA for the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RC1) (RFA-OD-09-003) is posted at grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/challenge_award/. In addition, Grants and Contracts Management as set up a web site for Vanderbilt faculty with direct links to the NIH homepage. The site lists the latest Program Announcements and funding news for Challenge grant funding under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The site is searchable by keyword and funding source, and contains application information and other economic recovery funding information. Please visit mc.vanderbilt.edu/gcm/ for the latest updates and related information.

Additional Challenge Grant Information:

  • NIH has received new funds for Fiscal Years (FYs) 2009 and 2010 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). NIH has designated at least $200 million for a new initiative called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research, which will support research on topic areas which address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that would benefit from significant 2-year jumpstart funds.
  • This FOA will utilize the NIH Challenge Grant (RC1) award mechanism, which has a non-standard due date of April 27, 09. It is a one-time-only solicitation therefore, no resubmissions are allowed and renewals will not be accepted. No LOI is required and applications will be submitted via grants.gov.
  • Budget requests should be commensurate with project needs up to a two-year project period. The requested budget may not exceed $500,000 total costs per year for a maximum of $1,000,000 total costs over a two-year project period. Pre-award spending will be allowed with the normal restrictions.
  • The Research Plan is limited to 12 pages and More than one PD/PI (i.e., multiple PDs/PIs) may be designated on the application
  • New PI's and Early Stage Investigators (ESIs) are invited to apply for Recovery Act Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research. Because the awards made under this program are substantial competing NIH research grants, recipients will not be considered New PIs or ESIs when they apply for NIH research grants in the future.
  • These awards will be subject to the standard NIH award terms and the Standard Terms and Conditions for the ARRA.
