Research Enterprise Newsletter - March 2007: Funding Opportunities
Cancer Research
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is accepting nominations for the Paul Marks Prize in Cancer Research to recognize a new generation of leaders in cancer research who are making significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or are improving the treatment of the disease through basic or clinical research. The prize is intended to encourage young investigators to help shape the future of cancer research. Nominees are required to be age 45 or younger on the date of the submission deadline. The winners present their work at a scientific symposium at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Each receives a medal and they share a cash award of $150,000. There is no limit on the number of nominations from VUMC. Deadline for submission is April 30, 2007. More information is available on the Center's website.
Brain, Mind & Behavior Research
The James S. McDonnell Foundation has announced the James S. McDonnell Scholar Awards to support investigator-initiated research in the area of Brain, Mind, and Behavior. The awards provide up to $600,000 over six years. Application deadline is April 10, 2007. The awards support research generating new knowledge and insights. They provide unrestricted funding to allow investigators to pursue and develop new directions for their research programs. Nominees must have completed all doctoral, postdoctoral, or fellowship training and hold an independent research position. Nominees in the earlier stages of their career are encouraged. Competition is expected to be fierce, so department chairs are urged to nominate the strongest applicants. Nominees are encouraged to contact Mike Kessen in Corporate & Foundation relations, who can advise on the process. Complete program information and application guidelines are available at the Foundation website.
Research in Teaching & Learning
The School of Medicine is accepting proposals to develop a good idea in teaching and learning. The grant will provide start-up support for implementing a new curricular idea or for researching an educational problem. There is a $10,000 funding pool, and individual project award amounts will depend on the number of awarded submissions. Deadline for proposals is May 15, 2007. Email John Shatzer for more information.
