Research Enterprise Newsletter - February 2008: Funding Opportunities
Conte Center accepting proposals for Neuroscience Pilot Grants
Investigators of the Center for Molecular Neuroscience and postdoctoral fellows/research track faculty in their laboratories are invited to apply for Neuroscience Pilot Grants of $20,000 for 12 months. These grants support innovative pilot studies in serotonin signaling networks. Projects should be relevant to the aims of the Vanderbilt Conte Center and should focus on the impact of functional and genetic variation on the network of proteins that affect the functionality of serotonin, and the neuronal/behavioral consequences that result. Investigators may reapply for a second year of funding, if appropriate. Five Pilot Grants will be awarded annually - three for postdocs/junior level faculty to stimulate early stages of project development. Application deadline is 5 pm, February 15, 2008. Contact Denise Malone for submission guidelines and procedure. Contact Dr. Elaine Sanders-Bush for research priorities. Submit applications as single Word or PDF document to Dr. Elaine Sanders-Bush.
Burroughs-Wellcome Fund accepting applications for Career Awards
The Burroughs-Wellcome Fund (BWF) is accepting applications for the Career Awards at the Scientific Interface. This award provides $500,000 over five years to support up to two years of advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of a faculty appointment. It is intended to foster the early career development of researchers with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in one of the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry (physical, theoretical, or computational), computer science, statistics, or engineering. Vanderbilt may nominate additional applications if one of the applicants is a woman, and if one of the applicants is African American, Hispanic or Native American. Because this is an opportunity that limits the number of nominations, Dr. Andrea Baruchin will collect nominations in preparation for a university-wide selection process. Those interested should send a letter of nomination, the candidate's CV, and a 3- to 6-page research plan to Andrea Baruchin by February 22, 2008. The deadline for applications to be at BWF is April 15, 2008. For more information, please go to bwfund.org.

Young investigators who are senior fellows with a committed faculty appointment or an early faculty member with tenure interested in understanding the health benefits of probiotics and the relationship between probiotics and the intestinal microbiota are encouraged to apply. The YIGPRO application deadline is April 1st, 2008. Grant applications will be ranked by the U.S Probiotics Scientific Board Selection Committee and notified by the GPC in May 2008. The grant start date is July 1, 2008. Applications must include a:
