Animal Resources Core

The Animal Resources Core provides a range of animal model systems to investigators working in the areas of diabetes and metabolism. It also offers surgical and experimental services, with limited analytical capacity in blood glucose and serology. Core personnel can assist in both small and large animal experiments, with an emphasis on procedures needed to study conscious, unrestrained animals. Staff also are expert in developing new procedures and animal models to accommodate evolving research needs. Many of the procedures conducted in the Core are novel; therefore, investigator training is an important Core service. Assistance with mouse experimentation falls under the auspices of the Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center, which branched off from this Core in 2001. The Core manages two large-animal laboratories in 702 RRB, with a third located in SSS-1314 MCN. Small animal laboratories are located in 843 Light Hall. Laboratory equipment available to investigators includes infusion pumps, blood flow meters, blood pressure monitors, gas analyzers, centrifuges, and glucose analyzers.
