OLLI CEE Groups

OLLI Connect Explore Expand (CEE) Groups are intended to offer a smaller and more hands-on-experience than traditional OLLI classes. The size and nature of the groups will vary depending on the preferences of the members. They will be lead and maintained by OLLI members.

Thank you to our OLLI CEE Committee: Doug Burroughs, Beth Gottlieb, Gail Martin, Kay Simmons, Linda Brooks, Viv Pocek and Mary Raffety!

If you would like to sign up and participate, please email oshervu@vanderbilt.edu   with the specified group you are interested in! The CEE group leader will contact those members interested in participating.  We also appreciate your suggestions for future group ideas.

Core Class Discussion Groups - These groups will be led by Gail Martin. Each group will meet immediately after the 9:30 am class.  For winter term the group will be discussing "Irish Comedy: Light and Dark" held on Mondays at St. George's Episcopal Church and "Nuns and Prostitutes of the Middle Ages” held on Wednesdays and will meet in The Commons cafeteria.

These discussions will give an opportunity to examine and consider the content of the class, and share experiences and opinions.

Please email us at  oshervu@vanderbilt.edu to participate and indicate which Core Class Discussion group you would like to join. The group leader will email you with details and confirm your participation.

OLLI Book Club  - New for this fall is our first OLLI Book Club. This group will be led by Kay Simmons.  The group will be meeting the first Monday of each month at the Vanderbilt Barnes and Noble from 12-1 pm.  The next book selected will be "Still Alice" by Lisa Genova.  This is a story about a young woman's descent into dementia through early-onset Alzheimer's disease.  'Alice' no longer has her ability to rely on her own thoughts and memories as she loses her cerebral life at Harvard.  It is a novel that is written with an understanding of the molecular biology of the disease, the author is a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Harvard University, and it gave Professor Genova the knowledge and vocabulary to understand the implications of the disease.

The group will not read a book in December, but instead, give each other a holiday present by bringing a list of books that are your favorites in January.

On Monday, February 2, the group will discuss the true story by Hector Tobar entitled "The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chillean Mine and the Miracle That Set Them Free."

Members can utilize their Vanderbilt Barnes & Noble 10% discount in purchasing books!  To sign up for the OLLI book club, please email us at  oshervu@vanderbilt.edu
