The Opportunity Development Center, Vanderbilt University

The Opportunity Development Center (ODC), established in 1977, is Vanderbilt University's equal opportunity and affirmative action office. We report directly to the University's Chancellor. The mission of the ODC is to take a proactive stance in assisting the University with the interpretation, understanding, and application of federal and state laws and regulations that impose special obligations concerning equal opportunity and affirmative action.

The ODC is responsible for monitoring and coordinating Vanderbilt's compliance with equal opportunity and affirmative action laws and regulations, including Title VI of the Civil rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination based on sex and sexual harassment; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination based on disability; and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Any student who feels he or she is being subjected to unlawful discrimination should contact the ODC. The ODC also handles inquiries and complaints regarding Vanderbilt's Statement on Sexual orientation, which affirms the University's commitment to the principle of nondiscrimination on the basis of being or being perceived as being homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual.

The ODC has developed interactive workshops and other programs that address subject matter in the following areas: Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action, Sexual Harassment, Diversity, Cross Cultural Communication and Employing Persons with Disabilities. We encourage the University community to allow our department to assist them in addressing issues of equal opportunity and affirmative action that may arise in the workplace.
