Why e-Portfolios?

Electronic Portfolios, or e-portfolios, are the equivalent of personal websites that students create to demonstrate their development and learning. Universities are increasingly concerned that individual classes are disconnected and unrelated to each other. E-portfolios have the potential to integrate curriculum and encourage students to make connections between classes through reflection and personal assessment. This information will be regularly updated and used for intellectual development, advising, internship placement, and career planning.

Students using an e-portfolio system are offered various templates that they can populate with a variety of components. These components could include coursework samples, video clips, graphics, and text that demonstrate the individuals’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. Through the use of a web tool, students can create and select which pieces of information to include in their e-portfolio; information is created (and edited) in one place, but can be used in many e-portfolios.
This gives students the ability to create many e-portfolios, all of which could contain similar pieces of information, updated simultaneously.

In addition, we are very interested in helping students create a website that would aid them in career preparation, planning, and the job search process. An online resume (a particular e-portfolio template) could include specific examples of our students’ work to potential employers. Employers would also have the ability to search the database of graduating HOD students and view e-portfolios of individual skill sets that might match positions they are trying to fill.

For Students:
• Create a collection of items that reflect their academic, personal and professional objectives and achievements
• Create customized portfolios and selectively share them over the world wide web
• Support their job search by collecting and sharing your academic history, work experience, and professional references with recruiters and employers
• Collaborate with other students, professors, and advisors on shared papers and projects

For Faculty:
• Track students' academic objectives, history, assignments and projects
• Provide secure evaluations and feedback on items that have been shared by students or other faculty
• Mentor and advise students on academic and career related issues

After evaluating a number of options, the software platform that is high on our list is by ePortaro. This web-based system would allow our 700+ students the ability to develop and publish multiple portfolios for various purposes (career, academic, specific projects, etc). This system will allow HOD to continue to be an innovative program through the use of technology and ongoing improvement.
