Student Travel Considerations
Before you travel….
- If you are going abroad make sure you leave copies of your passport with OACS and with a trusted friend who will be here the entire time you will be away (your parents are usually the best bet). Do the same with your driver’s license.
- Have copies of any credit cards you are taking with you incase they are lost or stolen so you can cancel it ASAP.
- If you are going abroad, GET TRAVEL INSURANCE!!! Can’t stress this enough… you can buy it though Vanderbilt for cheap…it’s very much worth it.
- Leave a copy of your flight itinerary with OACS and with someone you trust (your parents or a friend) in case of emergency. We don’t want to worry in case there is an accident and you are on the beach getting a tan!
- Let us know the best email address and phone number (if possible) to use to contact you while you are away.
- Go to the doctor! Find out what meds you need for your travels. Get extra meds before you go (don’t expect to fill up in Uganda on your favorite birth control pill) - know where the nearest doctor is in the area you are traveling to- and tell your traveling companions if you have special allergies/ medical needs.
While traveling…
- Locate the office of the nearest hospital BEFORE you need it! Find out their policy about insurance – do you have to pay first and get reimbursed later? Better to know before you have an emergency. Talk to people who live in the area- where would they go if they were sick?
- Know the laws (and the consequences of breaking them) in the country you are in. DON’T DO SOMETHING STUPID WHILE TRAVELING.
- Be safe when you are traveling—don’t bring large amounts of cash; use travelers checks (if they are taken in that country) or better still, use your debit/credit card.
- Don’t stay someplace unsafe, don’t walk alone at night (groups of three), and don’t carry expensive items with you unless you have to.
- Check in with your group leader and your parents when you arrive at your site.
When back Stateside/ in Nashville
- If you traveled out of the USA schedule an appointment with your doctor to check for TB, HIV, or anything else you may have been exposed to.
- Check in with OACS/ your advisor to let them know you are back in town.
- If you borrowed a vehicle, make sure it is safely back at the CHP!
