SPOTLIGHT

OACS advises over 50 service organizations, working on issues such as education, domestic and global health, and environment, among others.

How to Plan a Service Project

Identify a need:

-Check the OACS website and the Hands On Nashville website for posted opportunities.

-Talk with friends, OACS staff, and faculty for feedback on agencies, projects and issues.

-If you have already recruited volunteers to work with you, make sure everyone has a voice.

-Contact the community agency you wish to work with and arrange a date and time for your service. Also, make sure to find out what to wear and what supplies, if any, you will need to bring with you.

Recruit volunteers:

-E-recruit: Post your opportunity using the OACS website, listserv Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace.

-Ye Olde Standbys: Methods such as tabling, flier distribution, and ads in the student newspaper are almost always effective.

-Utilize OACS staff: OACS staff members are happy to help with service projects, and may even be able to put you in touch with an existing group that might like to help with your project.

-Faculty: If you have a class related to the project you would like to do, ask your professors if they would be willing to announce your opportunity.

-Get creative: Post a video on YouTube, make a piece of art related to your project to display, or even dress up in a costume- the possibilities are endless!

Plan for everything:

-Transportation: OACS vehicles are available for use related to service FREE of charge (with prior authorization), or if you’d prefer to take the bus, ask at the OACS office and we will assist you in finding the right bus route.

-Purchase your supplies: Don’t forget to buy what you need!

-Plan for emergencies: OACS staff members are available to assist you in planning for any possible scenario. Make sure you’re prepared!

Serve:

The planning is finally done- get out and SERVE

Reflect:

You and your group will get more out of the experience and be able to apply this understanding to future work, both academic and experiential.
