For Parents: The VIEW Program

Dear Parents,

The VIEW program offers a tremendous opportunity for your student to gain significant professional experience in the exciting city of Washington, D.C. The internship experience gained through the VIEW program is unique from any independent internship your students could find.

Consider the Top Ten reasons to do VIEW:

  1. Students have access to high caliber organizations (such as Senate and Congressional offices, CNN, NPR, and many nonprofit organizations) that partner directly with VIEW.
  2. Students participate in professional development workshops during the spring semester to ensure a top-notch resume, cover letter, and interview (skills they will take with them everywhere they go).
  3. Our program has never failed to place a student, which can relieve a lot of anxiety and pressure to "find an internship in DC."
  4. During the summer students live with other Vanderbilt students! Approximately 20 undergraduate students participate each year and we assign four students to every apartment. Making friends and having people to explore the city with is easy. Plus, these are friendships that will continue when they return to campus in the fall.
  5. Students live in fully furnished corporate stay buildings with key-card access. They have a full kitchen, washer/dryer in the apartment, and access to a workout facility as well as an outdoor pool. Students don't have to search for housing at all!
  6. There is also a full-time paraprofessional staff on-site throughout the program living in the same building as the students. The staff member plans programs and is a resource for students if they have any questions or needs.
  7. Students will have access to interesting programs planned solely for VIEW participants including social events (a Nationals Baseball Game), service projects (working at the soup kitchen), networking opportunities (VIEW reception of employers and alums), as well as civic engagement seminars (meeting with Pentagon officials and behind-the-scenes tour of CNN)
  8. Students are paired with a Vanderbilt Alum and have several opportunities to build a relationship with the mentor.
  9. VIEW housing is conveniently located in Arlington, VA at the Pentagon City Metro. This is a very safe area and students live within two blocks of the metro station, grocery store, and plenty of great restaurants and shops.
  10. VIEW provides students with an unlimited Metro pass during the program so they can commute to and from work and explore the city without worries.
