The Zanzibar Project
Interested in teaching English overseas? Excited about learning a new language? Come join us on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania this May 2010!
OACS is offering for a third year, its successful service learning program in Zanzibar. Some of the service opportunities include learning to teach English as a second language to young adults and pre-school children. You will also learn Swahili. All on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, Tanzania.
The 30 day program starts on May 10. It is not necessary to have teaching experience if you have the willingness and try to be flexible.
Students will live in the town of Mangapwani, (meaning 'Arab shore'), about 20km north of Zanzibar Town. Students will live in a local village, studying Zanzibar traditions and contemporary issues; and serving 15-20 hours a week in an established Non Governmental Organization: Creative Solutions.
While the tourist trade may have injected some much needed funding into the island economy, there are still major issues of poverty and economic hardship among the people of Zanzibar. Over 50% of children are malnourished. Fishermen, who once made a comfortable living with small nets off the side of wooden boats, are now losing their harvest to large commercial vessels. Students, who grow up speaking Swahili at home and in school, are forced to adjust to an English-only environment upon entering high school; not surprisingly success is limited and many drop out. There are few jobs to be had; fewer still for those who can not learn to speak fluent English and graduate from high school.
Students who travel to Zanzibar will have the unique opportunity to live and work along side locals in the community of Mangapwani, approximately 27 kilometers from Zanzibar town. The program fee is $720 and includes: room and board, meals, airport pick up and drop off; government work permit, service placement and supervision; administrative fees and Swahili classes. Participants are responsible for airfare and vaccinations.
Application deadline: November 6
