The Kampala Project
Given the US State Department's Travel Alert regarding political instability in Kampala and surrounding areas and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of students, we have decided not to offer the Kampala Project this year.
We will be using this hiatus as an opportunity to assess the project in order to enhance the educational outcomes of the experience and the sustainability of the program. Barring unforeseen circumstances, such as the recent violence, we will plan to offer the program again in 2010-2011.
Students interested in global service opportunities for next summer can check out the continuing Zanzibar Project and the new Ecuador Project.

Mission Statement
The Kampala Project seeks to establish a model service-learning program promoting Global Citizenship through a three-part approach:
- direct service internships for students
- academic engagement of a relevant theme
- cultural immersion
The Vanderbilt student participants will participate in Spring Semester orientation workshops, spend four weeks in Kampala, Uganda, and return to Vanderbilt to further enhance the university culture.

"There is no justification for us to abandon an entire subcontinent when we have the power to aid in remedying their situation. We are simply fortunate that we were not born in Uganda to two HIV+ parents or live in a situation in which we have to resort to sexual promiscuity to feed our younger brothers and sisters. We did nothing to deserve to be spared from that plight, as much as others did nothing to deserve to be born into such situations. If resources are available to us, which they are, and we have the power to train others to implement a dialysis machine or chemotherapy drugs, which we do, then it is our responsibility to make every effort to that end"
