The Rev. James Lawson, professor at Vanderbilt, gave the keynote presentation for the "We Speak for Ourselves" conference, an unprecedented meeting of people interviewed by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author, poet, and Vanderbilt alumnus Robert Penn Warren for his 1965 book Who Speaks for the Negro?
The Rev. Lawson spoke on "Allowing a Living Past to Compel a Pregnant Now" on Friday, April 4, the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
"We Speak for Ourselves" is part of a series of special events titled "A Place for the Humanities" in celebration of Vanderbilt University's Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities 20th anniversary. It is presented in association with the Heard Library and FiskUniversity.
The center promotes interdisciplinary research and study in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Because cooperative study in higher education is crucial to the modern university and the society it influences, the center is designed to intensify and increase interdisciplinary discussion of academic, social and cultural issues.
