DESCRIPTION:(Broadcast media note\: Vanderbilt has a television studio with a dedicated satellite uplink and an ISDN line).\n\nTwo higher education experts are available to offer commentary on Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling&rsquo\;s announcement today about the federal government&rsquo\;s new plans to track student progress\, increase student aid and hold colleges more accountable for student achievement.\n\nSpellings is expected to make the announcement in a speech today at the National Press Club in Washington\, D.C.\n\nWilliam Doyle\, assistant professor of public policy at Vanderbilt Peabody College for education and human development served as the project director for the first edition of &ldquo\;Measuring Up\, the State by State Report Card on Higher Education\,&rdquo\; and continues to serve as a consultant on the project. Prior to joining Vanderbilt\, he held the position of senior policy analyst at the National Center for Public Policy and Education.\n\nMichael McLendon\, associate professor of education at Peabody College\, directs the college&rsquo\;s Program in Higher Education Leadership and Policy and is currently serving a two-year\, elected term on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Study of Higher Education.\n\nMcLendon studies state policy for higher education with an emphasis on the role of political institutions and post-secondary governance structures in shaping higher education policy.
