![]() Excerpt from “House with Pool 2004,” a video by Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler. Birchler and Hubbard will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Room 103 of Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt campus. The lecture is part of StudioVU, a lecture series sponsored by the Studio Arts Department. The public is invited to the lecture, which is free. “Hubbard and Birchler use filmic and literary references to develop uncanny narratives of disconnection,” said Artpace San Antonio in a review of Eight, a video loop by Hubbard and Birchler about a girl trying to save a piece of cake from her rained-out birthday party. “Their work is simultaneously unsettling and affirming; we recognize the sense, the mood – almost.” Hubbard, an associate professor of photography at the University of Texas at Austin, has been collaborating with Birchler since 1990. Their work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Miami Art Museum and other museums internationally. Later in the semester, installation artist Mark Dion will lecture on Feb. 27 and printmaker Roger Shimomura will speak on March 12. These lectures in Room 103 of Wilson Hall will also be free and open to the public. Media Contact: Jim Patterson, (615) 322-NEWS jim.patterson@vanderbilt.edu |
