Poet A.E. Stallings to read at Vanderbilt

Stallings, author of collections including Archaic Smile and Hapax, will read at 8 p.m. in Room 101 of Buttrick Hall. She is also a translator of classics whose current project is a verse translation of De Rerum Natura, an epic poem by Lucretius. Stallings, a native of Decatur, Ga., who lives in Greece, was awarded the 1999 Richard Wilbur Award for Archaic Smile, and has twice been included in The Best American Poetry series. “Whether she engages in sonnets, couplets, or haiku, her language retains fluidity, grace, and ease,” said ForeWord in a review of Hapax. “It is rare to encounter a poet who enlists form so compellingly, without constraining a poem’s emotional content.” Mark Jarman, a poet and professor of English at Vanderbilt, says Stallings “is one of the finest poets of her generation.” Audio of Stallings’ reading will be posted on VUCast (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/news/), the news and information site of Vanderbilt University. |
