Five Zipcars are now available as part of a pilot program through Traffic & Parking and Procurement. Zipcar vehicles can be rented at an hourly rate by faculty, staff and students. Cars may be used for errands, doctor appointments and more. With more and more employees using mass transit and/or carpooling to work, the Zipcars will provide flexibility to leave campus for meetings and appointments.

There will be a special sign-up event on Thursday, Aug. 28, or you can sign up online anytime at www.zipcar.com/vanderbilt. The sign-up event will feature staff from Zipcar demonstrating how to use your membership card to get in and out of the car. They will be at The Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (the table and car will be located on the Horton Access Road by The Commons Center and the Dean’s Residence) and at the Student Life Center from 3 to 6 p.m. (the table and car will be in front of the Student Life Center during the Welcome to Nashville Vendor Fair).

Here’s how it works:

o    First, purchase an individual yearly membership for $35 by visiting one of the sign-up booths on Aug. 28 or going to the Web site www.zipcar.com/vanderbilt. (There are also department memberships available for $100 a year.)
o    Next, when you need to use a Zipcar, you will reserve it online or via phone.
o    Finally, you will pick up the car using your membership card. Gas and insurance are covered in the hourly rental fee.

Vanderbilt will have two Honda Civic hybrids, two Honda CR-Vs and one Volvo S40. A Honda Civic and a CR-V will be parked at the Commons; a Honda Civic and a CR-V will be parked at Kissam; and the Volvo will be parked behind Sarratt. The Civics rent for $7/hour; the CR-Vs for $8/hour; and the Volvo for $10/hour. There is a daily use limit of 180 miles.
