Cal Turner Program New Orleans Immersion Trip

The Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the Profession sponsored a Spring Break Immersion Learning trip to New Orleans, Louisiana March 1-7, 2009.  This experiential learning (one credit hour) course combined service and study of issues of poverty, race, and religion in New Orleans.  Nineteen members of the Vanderbilt University graduate school community participated in the trip, including students from Economic Development, Divinity, Law, Peabody, and the Graduate School of Religion.  The Vanderbilt group was hosted by Desire Street Ministries [www.desirestreet.org] in the Ninth Ward.  Trip participants met with local residents, faith leaders, and community leaders addressing a wide-range of advocacy issues from environmental concerns to adult literacy and city politics.
