Monday, Jan. 17-Friday, Feb. 4, 2005: Harold Lowe Civil Rights Photograph Collection Schulman Center Gallery, 2421 Vanderbilt Place. Exhibit hours: 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday-Thursday; 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Friday. A collection of powerful black and white photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement in Nashville. Free. Monday, Jan. 17: Candlelight Vigil, Benton Chapel, 7 p.m. Sponsored by Organization of Black Graduate and Professional Students. Bishop Joseph W. Walker, Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Voices of Praise will sing. In light of the Tsunami disaster, this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Vigil will include an honoring of the memory of the victims, and provide ways to aid the victims.

January 17 - January 31: Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, Vanderbilt University. Exhibit of 21 posters depicting the 20-year history of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Series at Vanderbilt University since its inception in 1985.

Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005: Bernice Johnson Reagon, Keynote Lecture, 6 p.m. The Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts, Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, 24th Avenue South and Capers Avenue. Thursday, January 20, 12:30 p.m.: 12:30 p.m., Wyatt Center Rotunda, Peabody College. "Race, Space and Scientific Education: Some Thoughts on the Political Economy of Urban Schooling. " William Tate, professor and chair of the Department of Education at Washington University in St. Louis, will give a talk at Peabody's annual Changing Lives Award Ceremony recognizing exceptional community service. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, 5 to 8 p.m.: "A Walk With Martin," Sarratt Promenade and Sarratt Cinema.
An exhibit highlighting the life of Martin Luther King Jr., this experience will bring to life the accomplishments and triumphs of a great individual. Through excerpts, photographs and film witness one of America's most influential people who changed our society and culture. Sponsored by Vanderbilt University's Kappa Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Saturday, February19, 2005: As part of this year's MLK celebration, the Vanderbilt community is invited to join in a one-day trip to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM - Free. The Office of Intercultural Affairs and Diversity Education and the Black Student Alliance will sponsor a day trip to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to view exhibits which "capture the spirit and courage of countless individuals" who participated in the Civil Rights Movement. Transportation and admission into the Institute will be provided free of charge to Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff. For more information or to reserve a seat on the bus call (615) 322-7859.
