Associate Professor Alex Powell is the recipient of the 2012 Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. This is the first time since the award was established in 1982 that a Department of Mathematics faculty member has received it.

The fall 2012 edition of Spectrum, the department's biennial newsletter, has just been published. Highlights include the appointment of the department's first Fields Medalist and a new undergraduate honors track and scholarship.
 

Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Vaughan Jones was among the faculty honored for extraordinary contributions to their respective fields during a recent celebration of endowed chair holders.

Ionut Chifan is the winner of the 2012 Samir Aldroubi and Amira Azhari Prize for Excellence in Postdoctoral Research. The prize is awarded every two years to recognize the research achievements of current and recent postdoctoral fellows in the department.

There was a surprise twist at the department's recent 2012 student awards ceremony. Both of the graduate student awards were shared - and by the same two students.
