Requesting an Account on the Math Server

The Department of Mathematics web server has the host name "www.math.vanderbilt.edu". Anyone associated with the Math Department who has a VUnetID can get an account on this server by contacting Pam Jones, pamela.l.jones@vanderbilt.edu. The request should include your VUnet ID (but NOT your password). After your account is set up, you will receive an email from the Vanderbilt ITS Department with your account name and instructions for obtaining your password.

The math server can be accessed via any file transfer program. A popular one used in the department is SSH Secure Shell. This program might already be installed on the PC you were issued. The "Host Name" you will need to enter is www.math.vanderbilt.edu.

Faculty, postdocs and graduate students are required to create a standard department web page with the Sitemason authoring tool, which is hosted on the Sitemason (rather than the Math Department) server. (For more information, click here.) However, other web pages created outside of Sitemason can be hosted on the Mathematics Department Server. These might include additional pages that link off your main faculty page, or a web site for a conference or workshop you are organizing.

An additional use of the math server is for group accounts. If you have a research group or a conference with a web site to which several individuals need access, you may request a group account, also by emailing Pam Jones, pamela.l.jones@vanderbilt.edu. NOTE: In order to participate in a group account, you must first have an individual account. Requests for group accounts should include the VUnet IDs of all the individuals whom you wish to have access to the group account.
