Class Remembers Mumford with Two Scholarships

The Class of 1990 lost a good friend when Keith Mumford, BA’90, died June 28, 2009, following a heart transplant. Mumford lived in Richmond, Va., and was an investment banker with BB&T Capital Markets. At Vanderbilt he was a varsity tennis player and majored in mathematics. He is survived by his wife, Emily Sackett Mumford, and four young children.
Last year the annual alumni tennis tournament at Vanderbilt was renamed the Keith Mumford Vanderbilt Alumni Tennis Memorial Tournament in honor of the former letter-winner.
Now, Keith’s classmates, other members of the Vanderbilt community, and his friends in the Richmond area are taking part in a tribute to him by endowing two scholarships in his name:
The Keith Mumford Tennis Scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding varsity tennis player, as Keith was himself. This scholarship will help recruit the best possible tennis student-athletes. It also will be important to sustaining Vanderbilt’s tennis programs. A minimum of $300,000 in one-time gifts and five-year pledges creates this scholarship.
The Keith Mumford Undergraduate Scholarship is to be awarded to a student with tremendous promise for a bright future who also has financial need. This scholarship is being created at a time when Vanderbilt is making new endowed scholarships for undergraduate students a priority. It will be part of Opportunity Vanderbilt, a special fundraising campaign for this important purpose. A minimum of $100,000 in one-time gifts and five-year pledges creates this scholarship.
Support for these scholarships is encouraged, especially between now and Dec. 31, 2010. An anonymous donor has stepped forward with a significant commitment to this effort, and the hope is that the first scholarships can be awarded in Fall 2011.
