I particularly enjoyed this issue regarding the Holocaust and World War II. I was in the European Theater and served in three campaigns as a paratrooper. What an experience that was!

Thank you for this wonderful article. The stories of those who survived the Holocaust and ultimately thrived never cease to be an incredibly compelling tribute to the human spirit’s triumph against all odds.

One of the individuals you featured was Inge Smith. Battle Ground Academy did a profile about Inge in the Spring 2007 issue of BGA Today. As you noted in your article, she was the founding head of Harpeth Academy, which is today BGA’s Lower School. The new lower school has been named for Inge.

Thank you for the commendable work you do to ensure the quality of Vanderbilt Magazine.

Harry Kahn, his wife Hannah Westfield, Erich Westfield, Ernest Freudenthal and others were classmates and friends of mine. Through them I learned about a world far beyond my small town–and I’ve been trying to learn more ever since. Knowing them changed my life. I am grateful to Vanderbilt administrators, who knew how to take good advantage of great human resources made unexpectedly available to them.

I just had to write and tell you how much I enjoy the articles in Vanderbilt Magazine. It keeps getting better and better. I especially enjoyed “In the Face of Destruction” and reading about all that the refugees and survivors went through to get an education. Thanks for your tireless efforts.

I attended the lecture series held on November 9, 2008. I must tell you that I read all that I can get my hands on about the Holocaust and the atrocities that were committed against the Jewish people. Walter Ziffer was especially intriguing because he spoke of wondering if he should write about all the things that happened to him. I want to urge him to tell it because it should never be forgotten so that, may God be merciful, not ever happen again. I would like to have asked the question: "Have any of you be able to come to grips with any form of forgiveness for your captors and/or guards?" Please forgive me if I seem at all trite in my asking, but it does interest me. Thank you.

One never tires of stories of people who start with materially nothing and rise to great success through their innate talent and industry. Such is the story of America. This well told story of Holocaust survivors who breeched the wide gulf from near death abuse and impoverishment to become well educated, affluent and highly contributing citizens is the epitomy of the American story. The excellent photographs of individuals and their families as well as those of the grim and officious stamped certifications of their status make this article an oustanding report. Had this issue of Vanderbilt Magazine preceded the recent evaluation request, I would have rated it even higher than the excellence that I gave it.
