Dear HOD Students, It is with a deep sense of gratitute that I express sincere thanks and congratulations on your recent visit to Manenberg on the Cape Flats of Cape Town, South Africa. You may notice on the photo on page 13/42 of the Visage, Cape Town blog, 2008 that the young girl has her front teeth extracted. This phenomenon is called "Cape Flats Smile" or in derogatory terms "Passion Gap". I have been campaigning relentlessly for this phenomenon to be addressed in the South African Dental/Health instituions. As you have witnessed the phenomenon, first hand, I would like to appeal for your opinion on your experiences of the Cape Flats Smile, anterior teeth extractions and your views on ways to ameliorate the dental harm that this dental treatment causes. I would suggest that you do a more thorough investigation of this unique, cultural phenomenon. I,m sure that a Google search on Ismail Larney Cape Flats smile would reveal my work in this area. Kind wishes, Ish (Ismail Larney, 8 Eisenhower Place, Bonnet Bay, Sydney Australia. email ilarney@hotmail.com )
