<p>Assistant Professor of Physics <strong>Kirill Bolotin</strong> has received a <a href="http://news.vanderbilt.edu/2011/03/bolotin-nsf-career-award/" target="_blank">Faculty Early Career Development award </a>from the National Science Foundation. The five-year award supports exploration into the conductivity of graphene, a recently discovered material that conducts electricity better than copper, has mechanical strength greater than steel and can be patterned into structures smaller than a virus.</p>

Wright-Rios, </strong>associate professor of history, was awarded an ACLS 2011 Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship. ACLS is a private, nonprofit federation of 71 national scholarly organizations.</p>

Randall used the residency to revise her fourth novel,<em> inFATuation, </em>which draws on her research into soul food and research being done at Vanderbilt on personalized medicine. James Baldwin, Saul Bellow, Langston Hughes and other distinguished writers have also served residencies at Yaddo.</p>

Zeppos during Vanderbilt‘s Spring Faculty Assembly. <strong>Robert Barsky, </strong>professor of French and comparative literature, was awarded the Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor Award. <strong>David Furbish, </strong>professor of Earth and environmental sciences, received the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award. <strong>Bunmi Olatunji, </strong>associate professor of psychology, received the Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. This award is determined by the chancellor based on nominations from students.</p>

<p>Novelist <strong>Tony Earley</strong>, Samuel Milton Fleming Professor of English, has been elected a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers.</p>
<p><strong>Tony Earley</strong>, Samuel Milton Fleming Professor of English, and <strong>Todd R. Graham</strong>, professor of biological sciences, received 2010 Chancellor’s Awards for Research. The university-wide honor recognizes excellence in research, scholarship or creative expression.</p>
<p><strong>Ellen Fanning</strong>, Stevenson Professor of Biological Sciences, was elected a fellow by the American Academy of Microbiology.</p>

<p>The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) elected four College of Arts and Science faculty as fellows. <strong>John Gore</strong>, Hertha Ramsey Cress Chair in Medicine and professor of physics; <strong>Jeffrey Johnston</strong>, professor of chemistry; <strong>Michael Stone</strong>, professor and chair of chemistry; and <strong>John Wikswo</strong>, Gordon A. Cain University Professor and A.B. Learned Professor of Living State Physics, were honored for distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.</p>

<p><strong>Elizabeth Lunbeck</strong>, Nelson Tyrone Jr. Professor of History and chair of the department, was named Distinguished Psychoanalytic Educator by the International Forum of Psychoanalytic Education. </p>
<p><strong>Terry Page</strong>, professor of biological sciences, was honored with the 2010 university-wide Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.</p>
<p>Professor of French <strong>Virginia Scott</strong> received the university’s Thomas Jefferson Award, made annually for distinguished service to the institution. </p>
<p>The U.S. Agency for International Development has awarded a $2.9 million award to <strong>Mitchell A. Seligson</strong>, Centennial Professor of Political Science, for work on a Latin American Democratic Indicators Monitoring System for El Salvador.</p>

<p><strong>Tracy Denean Sharpley-Whiting</strong>, Distinguished Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies and French, was named one of the top 100 young leaders of the African American community by <em>The Root</em>, an online magazine founded by scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. Sharpley-Whiting is director of the African American and Diaspora Studies program and director of the William T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies.</p>
<p><strong>Claire Sisco King</strong>, assistant professor of communication studies, received Vanderbilt’s 2010 Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. </p>
<p>The College of Arts and Science awarded the annual Jeffrey Nordhaus Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching to <strong>Mark Wollaeger</strong>, professor of English (humanities), <strong>Prasad Polavarapu</strong>, professor of chemistry (natural sciences), and <strong>Michael Bess</strong>, Chancellor’s Professor of History (social sciences). The Ernest A. Jones Faculty Advisor Award was presented to <strong>David Furbish</strong>, professor of Earth and environmental sciences. The Harriet S. Gilliam Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Senior Lecturer went to <strong>Steve Baskauf</strong>, senior lecturer in biological sciences and the Alumni Outstanding Pre-Major Advisor Award was presented to <strong>Scott Zeman</strong>, CASPAR adviser and senior lecturer in philosophy.</p>

<p><strong>Mark Hosford</strong>, associate professor of art, received a Tennessee Arts Commission 2010 Individual Arts Fellowship in Visual Arts. The award is one of the highest honors a Tennessee artist can receive.</p>
<p><strong>Larry Isaac</strong>, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, received the ASA Culture Section’s 2010 Clifford Geertz prize for best article and the 2010 Southern Sociological Society’s Distinguished Lecturer Award.</p>

Olatunji was also awarded the President’s New Researcher Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.</p>
<p><strong>Sokrates Pantelides</strong>, William A. and Nancy F. McMinn Professor of Physics, received a $1,556,399 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Grant Opportunity for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) program. Additionally, he and <strong>Kálmán Varga</strong>, assistant professor of physics, are co-primary investigators on a new grant from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.</p>
<p><strong>Daniel Usner, Jr.</strong>, Holland M. McTyeire Professor of History, has been elected president of the American Society for Ethnohistory for 2010-11.</p>
<p>The College of Arts and Science honored several faculty with 2009 teaching awards. Associate Professor of French <strong>Virginia Scott </strong>received the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Humanities; Professor of Chemistry <strong>Sandra Rosenthal </strong>received the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Natural Sciences; and Assistant Professor of Psychology <strong>Adriane Seiffert </strong>received the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Social Sciences. The Harriet S. Gilliam Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer was awarded to <strong>Andrea Hearn</strong>, lecturer in the Department of English. Associate Professor of Communication Studies <strong>Bonnie Dow </strong>was honored with the Ernest A. <p>Professor of Political Science <strong>David Lewis’</strong> <em>The Politics of Presidential Appointments </em>has won the 2009 Richard E. Neustadt Award, given by the American Political Science Association for the best book on the U.S. presidency published during the previous year.</p>
<p><em>Scrivere la pittura: La ‘funzione Longhi’ nella letteratura italiana </em>by <strong>Andrea Mirabile</strong>, professor of Italian, has been published by Angelo Longo Editore.</p>
<p><strong>Jesse Peterson</strong>, assistant professor of mathematics, has won a $50,000 research fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation aimed at encouraging promising young scholars. He is one of 118 researchers in physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience and economics chosen at the early stages of their careers because of their “exceptional promise to contribute to the advancement of knowledge.”</p>
<p><strong>Carol Swain</strong>, professor of political science and law, has been reappointed to the Tennessee Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.</p>
<p><strong>Robert B. Talisse</strong>, associate professor of philosophy, will be a visiting scholar at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York for 2009–2010.</p>

<p>Cecelia Tichi, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English, is this year’s Hubbell Medal winner. This lifetime achievement award is given by the American Literature Section of the Modern Language Association for significantly advancing the study of American literature.</p>
<p>Four College of Arts and Science faculty members were honored with university-wide awards for teaching excellence and service. <strong>Tiffany Tung</strong>, assistant professor of anthropology, received the Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. <strong>John Geer</strong>, Distinguished Professor of Political Science, was awarded the Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. The Joe B. Wyatt Distinguished University Professor Award to honor faculty whose contributions span multiple academic disciplines was given to <strong>Dana Nelson</strong>, the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English. The Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor Award was given to <strong>C. Neal Tate</strong>, professor and chair of political science and professor of law (see story on Tate on page 4).</p>
<p>At the fall faculty assembly, <strong>David A. Weintraub</strong>, professor of astronomy, received the university’s Thomas Jefferson Award for distinguished service through contributions as a faculty member in the councils and government of the university. Individual Chancellor’s Awards for Research were presented to <strong>Yanqin Fan</strong>, professor of economics and mathematics, and <strong>James G. Patton</strong>, professor of biological sciences. The research team of <strong>Gordon D. Logan</strong>, Centennial Professor of Psychology, <strong>Thomas J. Palmeri</strong>, associate professor of psychology, and <strong>Jeffrey D. Schall</strong>, E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Neuroscience, was also honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Research.</p>

<p><span><strong>William Caferro</strong></span>, professor of history, received the 2009 Otto Gründler Prize for his book, <em>John Hawkwood: An English Mercenary in Fourteenth Century Italy. </em></p>
<p><span><strong>Anastasia Curwood</strong></span>, assistant professor of African American and diaspora studies, received the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship for junior faculty.</p>
<p><span><strong>Ellen Fanning</strong></span>, Stevenson Professor of Molecular Biology, has been named a fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was also recently elected to the German National Academy of Science (Duetsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina), the world’s oldest continuously existing academy for medicine and natural sciences.</p>
<p>The trade paperback version of<em> Investing in College: A Guide for the Perplexe</em>d by<span><strong> Malcolm Getz</strong></span>, associate professor of economics, was published by Harvard University Press in September. Harvard first published the hardcover edition in March 2007.</p>
<p><span><strong>Victoria Greene</strong></span>, professor of physics, has been appointed executive dean in the College of Arts and Science.</p>
<p><em>Arts, Inc.</em>, a cultural assessment of the U.S. arts system by<span><strong> Bill Ivey</strong></span>, director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy, has been published by the University of California Press.</p>
<p><span><strong>John Janusek</strong></span>, associate professor of anthropology, has received a Dumbarton Oaks Fellowship in Pre-Columbian Studies for 2008–2009.</p>
<p><span><strong>Gary Jensen</strong></span>, professor of sociology, has been appointed editor of the journal, <em>Homicide Studies.</em></p>
<p><span><strong>David E. Lewis</strong></span>, professor of political science, has been awarded the Herbert A. Simon Best Book Award for <em>The Politics of Presidential Appointments: Political Control and Bureaucratic Performance</em>. </p>
<p><span><strong>Richard Lloyd</strong></span>, assistant professor of sociology, has been appointed consulting editor of the <em>American Journal of Sociology.</em></p>
<p><span><strong>John McLean</strong></span>, assistant professor of chemistry, received a 2008 research award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and a 2008 Starter Grant Award from the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh/Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh.</p>
<p><span><strong>Dana Nelson</strong></span>, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English and American studies, has <span>been elected to the American Antiquarian Society.</span></p>
<p><span><strong>Antonis Rokas</strong></span>, assistant professor of biological sciences, has been named a 2008 Searle Scholar. The honor, given to exceptional young faculty in the biomedical sciences and chemistry, is accompanied by a $300,000 research grant. </p>
<p><span><strong>Allison Schachter</strong></span>, assistant professor of Jewish studies and English, was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities summer grant.</p>
<p><span><strong>Robert Scherrer</strong></span>, professor of physics and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, co-authored “The End of Cosmology,” the cover story of the March 2008 <em>Scientific American</em> journal. </p>
<p><span><strong>Robert B. Talisse</strong></span>, associate professor of philosophy and political science, has been appointed editor of <em>Public Affairs Quarterly.</em></p>

<p>Chancellor <span><strong>Nicholas S. Zeppos</strong></span> honored several arts and science professors with 2008 faculty awards. <span><strong>David Wood</strong></span>, Centennial Professor of Philosophy, received the Joe B. Wyatt Distinguished University Professor Award, given annually in honor of faculty whose contributions span multiple academic disciplines. <span><strong>Daniel B. Cornfield</strong></span>, professor of sociology and director of the Vanderbilt Center for Nashville Studies, received the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award for distinguished accomplishments at furthering the aims of Vanderbilt University. <span><strong>Stephen G. Buckles</strong></span>, senior lecturer in economics, received the Madison Sarratt Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. The 2008 Thomas Jefferson Award, made annually for distinguished service through extraordinary contributions in the councils and government of the university, was awarded to <span><strong>Randolph Blake</strong></span>, Centennial Professor of Psychology. <span><strong>Douglas G. McMahon</strong></span>, professor of biological sciences and director of graduate studies, <span><strong>Tracy G. Miller</strong></span>, associate professor of history of art, <span><strong>Frank Tong</strong></span>, associate professor of psychology, and <span><strong>Mark A. Wollaeger</strong></span>, professor of English, were honored with 2008 Chancellor’s Awards for Research. <span><strong>Lenn E. Goodman</strong></span>, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and professor of philosophy, received the Earl Sutherland Prize for Achievement in Research, given annually for achievements in research, scholarship or creative expression that have had significant critical reception and recognition nationally or internationally.</p>

Berlind will use the research time on national supercomputers to simulate the evolution of dark matter.  </span></p>
<p><span>The first Chancellor’s Chair in History was awarded to </span><span><strong>Michael Bess</strong></span><span>, professor of history, who specializes in twentieth-century European history.  </span></p>
<p><span><strong>Barbara Hahn</strong></span><span>, Distinguished Professor of German, and </span><span><strong>Michael Bess</strong></span><span>, Chancellor’s Professor of History, have been awarded 2008 Guggenheim Fellowships. These competitive awards provide funding in the arts, sciences and other forms of scholarship. </span></p>
<p><span><strong>Tom D. Dillehay</strong></span><span>, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and department chair, has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The academy annually elects as new fellows the finest minds and most influential leaders of our day.   </span></p>

<p><span><em>In Defense of Negativity: Attack Ads in Presidential Campaigns</em> by </span><span><strong>John Geer</strong></span><span>, Distinguished Professor of Political Science, has been awarded the Goldsmith Book Prize of the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University. The prize goes to an academic book that best improves government.  </span></p>
<p><span><strong>Larry Isaac</strong></span><span>, Distinguished Professor of Sociology</span><span> and professor of American studies, received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship Award for 2008.  </span></p>
<p><span><strong>Molly Miller</strong></span><span>, professor of earth and environmental sciences, received the 2007 Chancellor’s Cup, given annually in recognition of the greatest contribution outside the classroom to undergraduate student-faculty relations.</span><br />

<p><span>“Endangered Still Life, #7” by </span><span><strong>Ron Porter</strong></span><span>, senior lecturer in art, took top prize in the Red Clay Survey at the Huntsville Museum of Art.</span></p>
<p><span><strong>Dieter Sevin</strong></span><span>, professor of Germanic languages and literatures and chair of the department, was awarded </span><span>the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (das Bundesverdienstkreuz). The Order of Merit is the highest tribute of the Federal Republic of Germany for services to the nation.  </span><span> </span></p>
