Rocky Alvey (right), observatory manager of Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory, discusses the operation of Dyer’s 24-inch telescope with first-year students from The Commons. Built in 1953 on a hilltop south of the Vanderbilt campus, Dyer was recently named to the National Register of Historic Places as a site of historical significance. Today, it is dedicated to education and public outreach.

Larry Bartels, May Werthan Shayne Professor of Public Policy and Social Science, and Randolph Blake, Centennial Professor of Psychology, were elected to the National Academy of Science. Election is considered one of the highest honors accorded U.S. scientists. Richard Blackett, Andrew Jackson Professor of American History, has been named the Harold Vyvyan Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History at Oxford University for 2013-14. Colin Dayan, Robert Penn Warren Professor in the Humanities, has been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

It was “methinks” and “sooth” and Shakespeare filling the air as College of Arts and Science students worked with classically trained actors during an intense week of workshops, classes and study with Actors From The London Stage.
