The
Leadership Vanderbilt Alumni Steering Committee attempts to
offer two service projects annually to the Leadership Vanderbilt
alums, their families and interested parties. The first project
is usually held in the fall semester, and the second project
is scheduled sometime between May and July. The projects,
which require no specialized skills, typically can be completed
by a group of approximately 30 participants.
Past service projects have included work at Lily's Garden,
at which 55 Leadership Vanderbilt alumni and their family
and friends helped plant more than 50 trees. Lily's Garden
is a playground near Vanderbilt designed to be accessible
for children with physical, sensory and learning disabilities.
It was founded by Lynn Shaw, who realized the need for such
a park when her daughter Lily was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular
Atrophy.
For the Harris-Hillman Special Education School service
project, 50 Leadership Vanderbilt alumni, their family and
friends helped clean, paint and landscape Harris-Hillman school.
The Adopt a Family service project raised more than
$2000.00 with the help of the Office of Employee Assistance.
The funds then were distributed to Vanderbilt families in
need.
