Celebrate Trans* Pride Week at Vanderbilt January 28th – February 1st with the following events:

Making Our Own Trans* Umbrella
Monday, January 28th,10am-5pm
K.C. Potter Center
Come to the KCPC to help us create our very own version of the Trans* Umbrella. We’ll be decorating a large rainbow umbrella with positive affirmations about trans* and gender non-conforming identities. Open to all members of the Vanderbilt community.

Trans* Clothes Swap
Collecting until Monday, January 28
In honor of Trans* Pride Week and Lambda’s Winter Clothes Drive, we will be having a Trans* Clothes Swap for the youth of the Just Us program at the Oasis Center as well as Vanderbilt students. Everyone’s invited to donate gently used clothes and accessories (jewelry, makeup, binders, etc.) that are no longer needed. Donations can be dropped off at the K.C. Potter Center (312 West Side Row). For directions, contact Petey Peterson at (615) 322-3330.

Lambda General Body Meeting: LGB But Not Quite the T
Tuesday, January 29th, 8-9pm
K.C. Potter Center
“LGBT” is the current mainstream acronym representing the queer community. All too often the T is mentioned without a space being created for the gender non-conforming. We see legislation, change, and widespread conversations for the LGB, but what’s really going on with the T? Open to all undergraduate students.

Film Screening: transparent
Thursday, January 31st, 6-7:30pm
Sarratt 216/220
Pink or blue. Male or female. Mommy or daddy. Categories that we all take for granted are broken apart in transparent, a documentary about 19 female-to-male transpeople living in the United States who have given birth and, in all but a few cases, have gone on to raise their biological children. transparent focuses on its subjects’ lives as parents, revealing the diverse ways in which each person reconciles giving birth and being a biological mother with his masculine identity. Free and open to the public.

Thank Goodness It’s Trans* Friday (TGI-Trans*-F)
Friday, February 1st, 12-2pm
K.C. Potter Center
Bring your lunch to the K.C. Potter Center for good company and conversation. Then stay for dessert and make your own Gender-bread person cookie in honor of Trans* Pride Week! Open to all members of the Vanderbilt community.

* The word “transgender,” or “trans,” is an umbrella term which is often used to describe
a wide range of identities and experiences, including: transsexuals, FTMs, MTFs,
cross-dressers, drag queens, drag kings, two-spirits, gender queers, and many more.

Student Same-Sex Domestic Partner
and Marital Spouse Registration

Dean of Students Office, Vanderbilt University

The student and marital spouse or same-sex domestic partner should visit the Dean of Students office, each in possession of a state- or federally-issued identification [1]. The Dean of Students office is located in 310 Sarratt Student Center, and generally open Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. For more information, please call (615) 322-6400.

Students and their marital spouses or same-sex domestic partners will be asked to complete a form affirming that they meet the following criteria:

We are not related by blood in a manner that would prohibit us from being married under Tennessee state law. [2]

We are at least 18 years of age. [3]

We are not legally married to anyone else.

We reside in a common household or share responsibility for the household.

Upon completion of the affidavit, the Dean of Students representative will notarize it, photocopy the affidavit and identification, and provide paper or digital copies to the student and spouse/partner and the Commodore Card Office. The student and their spouse/partner should then visit the Commodore Card Office together in order to obtain a Commodore Card for the registered spouse/partner.

If at any point the marriage, civil union, or/or domestic partnership is dissolved, students are expected to notify the Dean of Students office within 60 calendar days, and non-student spouses/partners must return their Commodore Card to the Dean of Students office.

Further Considerations

Consistent with the practice of the Commodore Card Office, all spouses/partners are required to re-register annually to continue these benefits.

Health insurance coverage for student spouses/partners is handled through an independent process: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/student_health/student-health-insurance.

Employees wishing to register their spouse/partner should consult this link to HR’s website: http://hr.vanderbilt.edu/benefits/domesticpartner.php.

Benefits of Registration

Student Recreation Center offers spouse/partner memberships with an additional fee and registration, using the Commodore Card for access. With membership, spouses and domestic partners would also be eligible for participation in some Outdoor Recreation Center programs.

Sarratt Box Office offers discounted movie tickets and certain free/discounted event tickets through the Commodore Card.

Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries provides library reading and borrowing privileges to spouses/partners through the Commodore Card.

Athletics Ticket Office allows spouses/partners to validate their Commodore Card for season tickets by paying a fee every season at the Ticket Office in the McGugin Center.

Vanderbilt Human Resources offers general discounts for Vanderbilt affiliates at http://hr.vanderbilt.edu/benefits/perqs.php; eligibility for spouses/partners varies and is often linked with possession of a Commodore Card.

In addition, domestic partners are able to put Commodore Cash or Meal Money on their cards for use in laundry machines, Commodore Cabs, copiers and printers, vending machines, on-campus food service, and other vending locations that allow payment with a Commodore Card.

Footnotes

A state driver’s license or non-driver ID; passport; a federal ID such as a military identification card, state, county or local government ID; or lawful permanent resident cards (often called “green cards”)

Tennessee code states, “Marriage cannot be contracted with a lineal ancestor or descendant, nor the lineal ancestor or descendant of either parent, nor the child of a grandparent, nor the lineal descendants of husband or wife, as the case may be, nor the husband or wife of a parent or lineal descendant.”

For marriages or domestic partnerships involving a student or partner under the age of 18, the student and partner and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the person(s) under 18 must meet with the Associate Dean of Students for a review of the proposed registration.
