Steven R. BaumDuring the last six years Steve has served as one of the original design team members for the Principal’s Leadership Academy of Nashville. Its initial meetings with the Dean and faculty members established a growing learning community that now exceeds over 100 educators. His administrative experience with process facilitation and previous work with principals, professors, and community members provides a unique understanding of this collaborative effort. EDUCATION1973 B.A., Vanderbilt University 1975 M.A., Peabody College 1989 Ph.D., Vanderbilt University EMPLOYMENT1973-1975 Intern, Teacher Corps Interns spent two intensive years working as teachers-in-training for an urban school system while pursuing a Master’s Degree with a specialty in Reading. Peabody College and Metro Nashville Schools collaborated in this federal program. 1976-1986 Teacher, Metro Nashville Schools Teaching a variety of grade levels allowed a broader understanding of curriculum and child development. I pursued further campus study of cognition, thinking skills, learning disabilities, and gifted education. 1986-1989 Assistant Principal, Metro Nashville Schools School system policies and procedures were the focus of my training. My supervisor mentored in a Socratic fashion. He prompted reflection about the connections among policies, values, and actions. 1989-2005 Elementary Principal, Metro Nashville Schools Experience as a principal gave me an appreciation for strategic planning, organization, measurement, flexibility, and professional development within a listening community. 2005-2006 Consultant to Principals Leadership Academy of Nashville Working closely with university faculty provided broader perspective, depth of knowledge and sharpened skills. 2006-2007 Full-time lecturer in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. |
