VUMC Prepares to Receive Patients From Hurricane Katrina

Sept. 2, 5:15 p.m.

By 7 a.m. Saturday morning (9/3), the first wave of patients is expected to arrive via a military transport plane at the Nashville airport.

As part of the NDMS hospital system, VUMC will receive some patients. At this time we do not know how many patients we (VUMC) will receive, the types of patients (adult or children) or their conditions. The anticipated minimum number that Nashville will receive is 70. VUMC WILL NOT receive all of these patients. The patients will be distributed throughout Nashville's hospitals.

-- The emergency operations center (EOC) will open at a time determined by the Administrator On Call (AOC) based on need and number of patients VUMC will receive.

-- LifeFlight Emergency Communications will assist with the Nashville Fire Department EMS and the Tennessee Department of Health - EMS, in arranging and coordinating transportation of patients.

-- VUMC continues to work as part of a coordinated response through the NDMS and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Officials are urging a coordinated response to reduce duplication of efforts and to properly allocate resources where they are most needed.

-- Staff my be called in over the holiday weekend to assist patients brought into the Nashville area. Please make sure you are aware of your departments on-call process and disaster response plan. If you carry a VUMC pager or call phone please keep it on and with you.

-- All managers and supervisors need to remain available via cell phone or pager over the holiday weekend in case we receive patients which take us over capacity.
