Vanderbilt responds to Hurricane Katrina
Information for Middle Tennessee college and university students affected by Hurricane Katrina
Sept. 9, 2:45 p.m.
Information for affected members of the medical community:
Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine is working to centralize the process to respond to medical students, graduate students, post-docs, residents, fellows, and medical school faculty who have been so seriously harmed by the hurricane and its aftermath, and who wish to relocate to this temporarily.
Medical Students. The Medical Schools in the damaged areas are making arrangements with other Medical Schools in Texas and Mississippi. Vanderbilt will consider taking 4th year medical students for clinical rotations on a case-by-case basis.
Residents and Fellows. Many of our training program directors have expressed an interest in accommodating trainees. An AAMC website has been set up to process these requests (residents@aamc.org), but the ACGME will coordinate any reassignment of trainees. Requests from residents or fellows to relocate to Vanderbilt should be forwarded to Fred Kirchner, the School of Medicine's liaison with the ACGME.
Graduate Students and Post-Docs. Roger Chalkley should be contacted regarding these requests to relocate to Vanderbilt. If School of Medicine faculty are interested in hosting a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, please contact Roger. An AAMC website has also been posted: researchtrainee@aamc.org. In addition, specific professional organizations are sending forth web sites that provide access to students who are searching for relocation possibilities.
Faculty with Research Programs. Early data indicate that research faculty in the affected areas are making individual arrangements through research networks and research organizations. Faculty from other schools who can document their prior faculty status will be appointed as Visiting Professors. A very limited amount of funds for research resources and for the costs of living may be available. School of Medicine faculty interested in sharing laboratories with a colleague who has suffered from the Katrina disaster, should first discuss any request regarding the potential hosting of Katrina victim laboratories with his or her Chair.
Clinical Faculty. Faculty from damaged areas who wish to practice medicine at Vanderbilt will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate Department Chair. Arrangements for obtaining a Tennessee Medical License will need to be made for any approved individuals.

Updated Sept. 2, 3:40 p.m.
In response to the news of approximately 75,000 college students whose educations have been disrupted by Hurricane Katrina, Vanderbilt University joins with others in the higher education community in offering limited academic opportunities to those students affected by the Gulf Coast disaster who are residents of Middle Tennessee or who have immediate family in the area.
Vanderbilt's professional schools have developed admissions polices on an individual basis:
-- The Graduate School of Vanderbilt University, upon the recommendation of a Director of Graduate Studies and the appropriate school or college Dean's office, will approve limited-term admission, for the Fall 2005 semester only, of a graduate student displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Such students will be admitted as Special Non-degree students and may audit or enroll in current course offerings. Enrollment in a given course will require the approval, on a space-available basis, of the professor teaching that course. The cost of enrollment will be $500 per course, plus any relevant fees. Exceptions to this policy, including admission for subsequent semesters, will be considered on a case by case basis.
-- The Vanderbilt Law School will accept up to 25 students from the law schools at Tulane and Loyola universities, both located in New Orleans. "In accordance with the wishes of the deans from those schools, we will accept only third-year students from Tulane and second- and third-year students from Loyola," said, Don Welch, associate dean of the Vanderbilt Law School.
-- Upon the recommendation of a Department Chair, the Dean of Peabody will approve limited-term admission, for the Fall 2005 semester only, of postbaccalaureate students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Such students will be admitted as Visiting Students and may enroll, for credit or as an auditor, in current course offerings. Enrollment in a given course will require the approval, on a space-available basis, of the professor teaching that course. The cost of enrollment will be $500 per course, plus any relevant fees. Exceptions to this policy, including admission for subsequent semesters, will be considered on a case by case basis.
-- Interested second-year MBA students can choose from about a dozen elective courses in a variety of concentration areas at the university's Owen Graduate School of Management. The Owen School operates on a module system with the next module beginning Oct. 17. Students interested in enrolling are encouraged to contact the Owen School by Sept. 15.
-- Students interested in a specific professional program should contact that school's admissions office directly.
Area undergraduates interested in coursework at Vanderbilt should apply as a Visiting Student - under the category of Transient Student - through the Division of Unclassified Studies (DUS). No application fee is required due to these special circumstances, and applicants will be notified of their admission status to DUS within 24 hours. Applicants should be prepared to participate in a rigorous educational environment and must be residents of Middle Tennessee or have immediate family in the area. Vanderbilt can best serve interested Visiting Students if they submit their application in person so that a member of the Registrar's office can discuss individual curriculum needs and course availability.
Because the fall semester began at Vanderbilt on August 24th, September 7th is the final day on which students can begin attending classes at the university as a Visiting Student.
All students enrolled at Vanderbilt - including Visiting Students - are required to adhere to the Vanderbilt Honor Code, an integral part of our academic community.
