COMMUNITY CAN AUDIT JEWISH STUDIES COURSES
Many have expressed interest in furthering their informal education in Jewish Studies, but haven’t wanted to take the GRE exams and register for a formal MA degree. The Program in Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University is pleased to announce that we are opening our courses to the community on a limited basis. With the instructor’s permission, you are welcome to audit courses of special interest to you. You will not get academic credit for the course and it will not appear on a transcript. Imagine the possibilities – learning without papers and exams!

Phillip Ackerman-Lieberman recently celebrated the completion of the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World, for which he has been an active contributor and member of the editorial board.
May, 2010
Ackerman-Lieberman has also received final word that his Fulbright in Egypt for next summer has been approved. The project is entitled "An Important Manuscript of Islamic Partnership Law", and his sponsor is al-Azhar University in Cairo. The project involves surveying two heretofore unpublished legal works on partnerships located in the Egyptian National Library in Cairo --the Kitab al-Shirka of the Kitab al-Asl of Muhammad b.al-Hasan al-Shaybani (d.805 CE) and the corresponding section in the Kitab al-Kafi of Hakim al-Shahid (d.945 CE). The intent is to contextualize the development of partnership law from Shaybani to its apogee in the Kitab al-Mabsut in Shams al-Aimma al-Sarakhsi (d.1106 CE) in terms of the economic and demographic changes taking place during the "commercial revolution" of the Middle Ages. Julia Cohen has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Scholarly Editions and Translations grant for The Sephardic Studies Reader, 1730-1950, a documentary history to be co-edited with Sarah Abrevaya Stein of UCLA. June 24, 2010
Allison Schachter has just completed her book manuscript: Diasporic Modernism: Hebrew and Yiddish in the Twentieth Century. The book traces the historical arc of Hebrew and Yiddish modernism from the tail end of the Russian empire in the 1890s to New York in the 1970s. June 25, 2010
