Virtual Private Network (VPN) Services

Transmitting information across the Internet is by its nature an insecure method of transmitting data. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) uses encryption and tunneling to permit a secure connection from an off-campus computer over the Internet to Vanderbilt's network. The VPN helps preserve data confidentiality and data integrity.

For more information about this VPN implementation, read the Frequently Asked Questions list, the detailed VPN overview. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk at 615-343-1631 for any further questions regarding the VPN.

NOTE: Security reasons require us to block access from the open Internet to VUspace. As of December 22, 2003, all users must use the VPN to mount VUspace from an off-campus machine connecting over an Internet Service Provider (ISPs like Comcast, EarthLink, BellSouth, AOL).

To access VUspace from an ISP, you must use Vanderbilt's Virtual Private Network (VPN). To use the VPN you must install the VPN client software on your home computer and you must have a VUnetID. When you use the VPN, your computer will be given a secure Vanderbilt network address for accessing certain Vanderbilt information and services like VUspace.

The VPN is welcome news for Comcast users who haven't been able to connect to VUspace because of Comcast security policies. These individuals will now be able to access VUspace using the VPN.

Please note: If you use a Vanderbilt dial-up modem pool (VUaccess or the VUMC modem pool) your access to VUspace will not change.

To download the VPN software, visit the VPN client downloads page (requires VUnetID).
