Temporary Housing
If you arrive in Nashville and need temporary housing until you have secured something more permanent you might consider extended-stay hotels, vacation rentals, or youth hostels. Concerning extended-stay hotels, the ones nearest to campus, unfortunately, are generally more expensive than those farther away, though even the distant ones are less expensive than conventional hotels. Here are few options:
- Scarritt Bennet Center: 1008 19th Ave. S. Nashville, TN 37212; Tel: (615) 340-7500
- Extended Stay Hotels: 3311 West End Ave. Nashville, TN 37203; Tel: (615) 383-7490
- Homestead Studio Suites: 727 McGavock Pike Nashville, TN 37214; Tel:(615) 316-9020
- Studio Plus Deluxe: 9025 Church St. E. Brentwood, TN 37027; Tel: (615) 373-4272

- Vacation Rentals By Owner: Follow the link to discover several options in and around the city. Prices and availabilities vary.
- airbnb, vacation/short-term rentals
Permanent Housing
For off-campus apartments, you will almost certainly be required to sign a lease (rental contract). Be sure to read the lease carefully before signing. When you sign a lease, you are legally committed to the conditions of the document, including payment of rent for all months of the agreement. Make sure you avoid leases that obligate you for more than a year. Most landlords will require a security deposit ranging from $100 to the equivalent of one or two months’ rent. This deposit will be returned to you when you vacate the apartment, provided nothing has been damaged and you have maintained the conditions of the lease. You should be certain that you have found a satisfactory living situation before you sign any sort of a lease, as this is a binding legal contract.
To fill out a housing contract you will need the following:
- Passport and student visa (I-90)
- Financial declaration (proof of income or bank statement)
- Bank account (to pay by check)
- Social Security Number (as soon as you get one) or some may accept VU ID number
- Deposit and fees (security deposit, redecoration fee, application fee, pet fee, etc.)
If possible, try to find a place to live before you arrive in Nashville or budget money for temporary lodging.
There are several apartment listing resources on the internet. Many of these links include floor plans and pictures of the units. Look below for the links. Nashville’s local newspapers, The Tennessean, The City Paper, and the alternative paper, Nashville Scene also have extensive classified advertisement sections which include apartments, houses, and condominiums for rent. Also browse the classifieds once you arrive to find home furnishings, cars, and much more.
In the process of finding and securing housing, in addition to renting or buying used furniture, CORT Destination Services is an excellent resource.
