chatELC Program Overview
chatELC is a program designed to support the development of English Fluency, situational English, and cultural competency of spouses and partners of current Vanderbilt students, faculty, and staff through semi-structured English conversation groups. The conversation groups will be led by Group Leaders from the Vanderbilt community and leet for 11 weeks in the Fall and Spring semesters and for 3 weeks in the summer term. General English for Spouses/Partners – Program Overview
This tuition-free English course for VU community spouses/partners helps non-native English speakers with a low to intermediate proficiency develop functional oral language skills commonly used in social situations through a series of listening, speaking, and reading activities.
The program was originally funded by a Peabody College Department of Teaching and Learning Instructional Improvement Grant and is currently funded through the ELC.

Community Conversation Sessions
American Conversation Partners
This is a no-cost conversational English program in which international students and spouses are matched with an American college student or volunteer who will help them improve their conversational skills. We meet on Mondays, 6:45-8 p.m. Asaph’s Chamber, 1004 16th Ave. S, Nashville 37203. Light refreshments are served. Registration is recommended. Belmont International English
Beginning, mid-level, and upper level English classes are offered during the academic year for adults, free of charge. The classes are held at Belmont United Methodist Church, 2007 Acklen Ave., in Hillsboro Village. Applicants will be referred to take a preliminary test before enrolling. Friday Conversations at Fido
This is a great place to practice your English and make new friends from Nashville and around the world. We sometimes have a topic, other times a presentation and often we just talk as friends. Nashville Adult Literacy Council
The NALC English Language Learning program offers beginner level classes, small groups, and one-on-one instruction to Davidson County adult immigrants aged 18 and over who would like to improve their English communication skills. Tennessee Foreign Language Institute
TFLI offers structured classes in advanced conversation in real-life situations, as well as grammar, writing, pronunciation, and TESL preparation for a fee. The placement test, which costs $20, is by appointment.
