An Exploration of Burden of Justice: 1863
TPAC's Polk Theater

Some 10,500 armed conflicts occurred during the Civil War, ranging from battles to minor skirmishes.  Burden of Justice: 1863 tells the story of a skirmish between Union soldiers and local citizens on July 2nd in western Dickson County, Tennessee, at a place called the Irish Shanty.  Playwright Carolyn German of Nashville's Theater Craft used original transcripts of legal proceedings in Clarksville to recreate the trial of Aaron James, which was brought before President Lincoln and reported in the New York Times.  A single actor portrays ten distinct characters at a breathtaking pace, inviting audience opinion and inspiring lively debate about truth and justice.
