Cost= $1,063 / Sign-up by: Bring $500 cash, check, or Vanderbilt Card by Fri, Feb. 1
Pre-Trip Meeting: Wed, Jan. 16 at 6 pm.
2013 marks our 18th trip to the canyon since 1992. For the fourteenth year, however, we will get there in style, via air to Phoenix and charter bus to the canyon. We are planning on two hiking groups, both of which will hike a 25 – 35 mile trail the entire week, depending on permits. Needless to say, the Grand Canyon is incredibly beautiful, awesome and spectacular. Designed for the experienced backpacker, we will allow enthusiastic beginners on this trip. Everyone who goes must be in good, physical shape by the time we leave. Participants are expected to attend four more Pre-Trip Meetings in 2013, as well as a Pre-Canyon Hike. Note: this trip will not be offered again until March 2015. Estimate trip duration: 5:30 AM Sat. to 4 PM Sun.

HIKING @ Radnor Lake State Park, TN
Cost: $3 / Sign-up by: Fri, Feb. 1 / Pre-Trip Meeting: Tue, Feb. 5 at 5 PM
This is your chance for an afternoon break in the woods. Radnor Lake is a nice State Park that is surprisingly within Nashville! Plan on hiking about 3 hours: up and down the wooded ridges and around the lake. Total hiking distance is 4-5 miles. Estimated trip duration: 1 pm – 5 pm
FEB. 16 (Sat)
Park Clean-Up @ Bells Bend Park, TN
Cost: FREE! / Sign-up by: Fri, Feb. 8 / Pre-Trip Meeting: Tue, Feb. 12 at 5 PM
Bells Bend is another relatively new park in Nashville that is being developed as a more natural park, rather than a “ball field park”. We will be doing some site preservation work around the historic Buchanan House, built in 1842. Specifically, we will remove invasive plant species and pick up trash and debris from around the house. Experienced park staff and equipment will be provided to help us. Lunch is also provided, and hiking afterward is an option. Estimated trip duration: 8 am – 3 pm.
FEB. 17 (Sun)
CLIMBING (Beginner to Advanced) @ Kings Bluff, TN
Cost: $22 / Sign-up by: Fri, Feb. 8 / Pre-Trip Meeting: Wed, Feb. 13 at 5 PM
Wall climbers, it’s time to try the “real thing”! Kings Bluff is a great location for you to experience the fundamentals of rock climbing with our knowledgeable staff. Shoe rental = $5.50 extra. Estimated trip duration: 9 AM – 5 PM.
MAY BREAK 2013
May 18 – 26 (Sat to Sun)
Canoe-Camping @ Buffalo National River, Arkansas
Cost: $390 / Sign-up BEGINS: Mon, Jan. 7, 2013 (from 12 noon – 6 pm.) / Sign-up by: Thu, Feb. 28, 2013
Bring $100 cash, check, or Vanderbilt Card to the Outdoor Rec. Center
The Buffalo National River of northwest Arkansas is one of America’s finest free flowing rivers. This entire trip will be in the national park; the Buffalo was the first river named as a national river in the United States. We plan on paddling 63 miles in 7 days on this beautiful river. The first day will have some whitewater rapids, but the rest of the trip will be a moderate to easy Class 1 float. Massive limestone bluffs, waterfalls, and side hikes will add to the fun of this trip. We will camp every night on the river in either a developed campsite or along a more remote gravel bar. We will have one day of rest, where we will not pack up and paddle. We will be primarily paddling canoes, 2 people plus gear per boat. We will also have 2-3 long kayaks on the trip to give everyone the chance to paddle a kayak. Previous paddling experience is helpful, but not required. Participants must know how to swim. We will stay in a cheap hotel on the last night of the trip, in Conway, Arkansas. Participants are expected to attend three Pre-Trip Meetings in 2013. Estimated trip duration: 7:00 AM Sat. to 4 PM Sun.
Cost includes: van transportation, on-the-river food, hotel at the end of the trip, group camping equipment, river bags, paddling jackets, canoes, kayaks, and paddling gear. Space is limited to the first 12 people that sign up, so don’t delay.
To sign up for a trip, come to the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC), located on 2600 Children’s Way, kind of behind the Student Rec. Center, and pay a deposit or the full amount of the trip. The ORC accepts cash, check, and the Vanderbilt Commodore Card. For more info on trips, workshops, and equipment rentals, check out the web at www.vanderbilt.edu/outrec.
