What is (Avant-Garde) Art? The Case of Malevich’s “Black Square”

Dr. Jason Strudler, lecturer in Russian, will be the featured speaker.

Is the -€œBlack Square-€ art or not?  If so, what kind of art?  If not, what does it say about our definition of art?

The talk will focus on Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 painting of a black square on a white background (pictured above), a work that scandalized the art world and continues to do so to this day. We will use the painting, one of the most iconic images of Russian and international modernism, to discuss the importance of the question of “what is art?” for the avant-garde of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
