Michelle Spada

Class of 2012

Major: Biomedical Engineering
Hometown: Norristown, PA

In high school, Michelle started a service-immersion program and summer camp called Operation: Come Together. This program exposed teenagers from local high schools to the reality of poverty in Norristown. Michelle used the teenagers’ help to run an eight-week long summer camp for Hispanic children. She taught dance classes to the children, organized book drives in her local area, and used the books to teach English to the children. Michelle was the executive of the Outreach Committee at her high school. She organized service projects for her school and also advised other students on ways to get involved and give back to their community. For one of her service projects, Michelle brought the Hispanic families from Norristown to her high school for a “Spring Olympics,” a day of fun and games. Michelle was a counselor at Camp Sunshine, which is a camp for kids with life-threatening illnesses located in Casco, Maine. She also volunteered at the Rose Garden Home Mission, a crisis pregnancy center in Kentucky run by the Franciscan Daughters of Mary. Michelle later held a fundraiser at her high school to raise money for the Rose Garden Home Mission. Michelle has also been involved with Back on My Feet, a non-profit in Philadelphia that uses running to promote the self-sufficiency of the homeless population. Michelle volunteered as a runner and later as an intern. Through her internship, Michelle helped plan and execute Philadelphia’s first 24 hour marathon. Michelle is very excited about being an Ingram Scholar and hopes to find new opportunities to serve in the Nashville area.
